It is necessary to save Machu Picchu!

A project of cablecar threatens the sacred and religious sanctuary of the Incas again!

February 20, 2004, the National Room of Tourism (CANATUR), threw back, at the time of his its tenth Convention, a project of installation of a cablecar on the historic and sacred site of Machu Picchu.

This project, menacing directly the site, is lived like a provocation by the inhabitants of Cusco and Calientes Aguas, a small village situated to the foot of the Machu Picchu and of where should leave the cablecar. It is a real attempt against the world heritage of the humanity!

David Ugarte Vega Centeno, an anthropologist of the university San Antonio Abad (UNSAAC), Director Départemental of the Nacional Instituto of Cultura (INC) of Cusco, fulminates and tent currently, by all means, to prevent this suicidal project.

Machu Picchu is not able to, indeed, to welcome daily that hardly more of 1500 to 2000 visitors. Construct on an artificial terrace, the site simply threatens to collapse! A serious survey, led in 2001 by a Japanese team of archaeologists and geologists, put in evidence the instability of soil and the basement of Machu Picchu, provoked by the daily stampings of the thousands of tourists. Otherwise, some blocks of stone have the tendency to remove the shoes of their pedestal because of these same stampings. The project of cablecar foresees to double the daily number of tourists in this former sanctuary, as well as the construction of a big park to theme, to a few hundreds of meters from there! A Disneyland to the country of the Incas!

Doctor Jorge Flora Ochoa, another anthropologist of Cusco, had already decided a short time before, on the intentions and the responsibility of mayor Oscar Valence, which would have encouraged this project, in the main interest of the business managers of the region, which would have participated directly in the construction of the cablecar. This one invoked a better easiness of access in the site and a bigger comfort for the foreign tourists. As for the protection of the natural habitat and to the beauty of the places, he hardly made state of it.

However, the authorities of the district of Machu Picchu, refuse that one implants some mechanical element that it is thus and protests against such an attempt. They organized a petition against the National Room of Tourism in the goal to slow down this project before he doesn't materialize and that it gets the downstream of the governmental authorities and the numerous private enterprises, that would have, them, interest to the implantation of an equipment on the complex archaeological of Machu Picchu.

Some voices rise to prevent such a cultural and ecological disaster! We must relieve them in Europe and must recall the intangibility of the city of the Old Peak.

Encouraged by the departmental Director of the Inc, the university of Cusco mobilizes itself currently to protect the former city inca. The students organized, in the month of last March, a big" Walk of the Sacrifice ", between Cusco and Machu Picchu, to say "NO" to the cablecar.

Untiring, David Ugarte Vega Centeno, always fights to make fail this mad project. To a journalist's .provocatrice- question to know if his situation was not inconvenient for it, while opposing the will of the National Room of the Tourism thus and to the one of some political personalities of Lima, the Director of the Inc answered, visibly indignant, in the local press (Cf. : "El Comercio ", Saturday February 21, 2004), that he was not the Government's civil servant but of the State ", and that he had been elected by a Council Régional of the Culture ".

"I am civil servant of the State no of the Government and I have been elected by a Council Régional of the Culture. And as such I defend the interests of the society so that the State is merely an instrument of preservation of the interests of this same society. "We are going to fight", he pursues, "so that these gentlemen withdraw their insane project because Machu Picchu is a religious site and the installation of a cablecar would be as absurd as to construct an elevator on the towers of the big cathedral of Cusco or to the Wailing wall. "

It is necessary to respect this big religious site of the former inhabitants of Peru and their descendants. We cannot permit this flagrant violation of the heritage cultural, historic and archaeological of Peru, writes down on the list of the world heritage of the humanity to the UNESCO.Que the promoters are going to see elsewhere!

Thanks to the action efficient of Villegas Americo, a living Cusco architect in Paris and working with the Unesco since about twenty years, the previous attempt led to Peru for the installation of a cablecar in Machu Picchu had can be foiled" in extremis ". In love with his country and of his heritage, conscious of the present perils, Americo fights again by this organism to interrupt this suicidal project for the lost city.
