The treasure of Machu Picchu

Peru threatens to pursue before an international court one of the most prestigious American universities, the one of Yale, that saw to pass the spouses Clinton, George Bush and John Kerry. If the university doesn't restore the treasure of Machu Picchu" borrowed" in the beginning of the last century by the discoverer of the site, Peru will finally put his/her/its threat to execution.

Hiram Bigham

In 1911, Hiram Bingham, after having recovered, by chance, the city of Machu Picchu, made transport, in three journeys, in Yale, close to New Haven, more than 5 000 objects. According to the present Peruvian president, Alejandro Toledo, the university of Yale had to restore it in 1916. Hiram Bingham, become rich and famous, after having published several works relating his/her/its adventures, has first been elected governor of the State of Connecticut, then senator in Washington.

The" treasure of the Incas ", that traveled on the whole American territory in 2005, attracted more a million of visitors.

We hope that the American authorities will restore this archaeological material, belonging to the national heritage of Peru and the one of the humanity, soon. We will follow this file closely and won't fail to hold you aware of these progress.

A meticulous inventory of the treasure of Machu Picchu, realized recently at the university of Yale, in the United States, showed that it is not 4 000 details which would have been "taken" in this time, but 10 times more!

The Peruvian government of this time, steered by Augusto B. Leguía (1908-1912) had granted temporarily a temporary exit of details. But it was never held an official register of these. As far as, according to Peruvian specialists, important lots went out of the national territory irregularly, via Bolivia.

The current president of Peru, Alán Garcia Perez, fulminates. He has just asked his Minister of Health, Hernán Garrido Lecca, to repatriate this precolombian treasure, more beautiful discovery of the XXth century with the grave of Toutankhamon, in Egypt, by Howard Carter, in 1922. Not that Alan Garcia has severe doubts on the mental health of the vice-chancellor of Yale who lied downright shamelessly on Hiram Bingham's booty, but because Peru has no Ministry of Culture, but an administration, the INC, the National Institute of the Culture.

These 46 332 details are distributed in 5 728 lots: 3 497 lots of ceramic, 126 lots of human rests, 11 lots of metals, and 1 038 lots relative to the fauna. The inventory was made by the own services of the INC in the premises of Peabody Museum of the university of Yale.
